U-tubes heat exchangers are most typically used in nuclear power plants as steam generators. They are used to boil water recycled from a surface condenser into steam to drive a turbine to produce power. Most shell-and-tube heat exchangers are either 1, 2, or 4 pass designs on the tube side. This refers to the number of times the fluid in the tubes passes through the fluid in the shell. In a single pass heat exchanger, the fluid goes in one end of each tube and out the other.
U-tube heat exchanger structure
One fluid flows through the tubes and exits the heat exchanger; the other fluid circulates on the outside of the tubes within the cylindrical shell. Heat is transferred from one fluid to the other through the walls of the tubes. The flow path of the fluid within the cylindrical shell is directed through the vessel by means of baffles, which has the effect of increasing the flow path and contact time of the fluid heat transfer interchange.
Materials that can be selected for the tubes of shell and tube heat exchanger
·Carbon steel
·Stainless steel
·Hastelloy
·Titanium
The wall thickness of the tubes varies from 1.8mm to 3.0mm, depending on the corrosive property of the fluid and working pressure of the process.
